Match report

When replying on the blog let me know who you are - some told they are available but have given me their name.

Match report -
The game was ok we had good parts throughout, with our ever to common periods where we would go to sleep like usual. Once again these cost us deeply and were a large factor in our loss. We were able to penetrate the line out wide, around centre and wing and gain good ground. But lacked runners coming off these people. In the backs I found that if a mistake was made eg. the ball was dropped, which was fair enough in the field conditions. The backs were not hungry for the ball and needed to show more intensity, a lot of times we stood back looking at the ball rather than retrieving it. Other than that, the backs played well with solid defense in close. We were caught on the outside and were out numbered as the full back entered the line a lot. Peter has a lot to learn but played a good first game as full back to his credit. The forwards had more hunger , as usual for the ball but also had a few bad points to our game which can be worked on. When the ball was taken to ground we didn't have people hitting the ruck's hard and setting strong bridges. This made it hard for Piri to give clean ball. At the kick offs we were shocking, we let the ball bounce nearly every time which cost us dearly but not nearly as much as it could have.
Over all we played ok but still have a lot to work on if we want to be playing to what we all know we can.
Well done to Peter for his goal kicking it saved us from a trashing which at times we deserved. Putaruru deserved to win with most of their points being achieved by fair tries and hard work.

Coaches Comment - Whakatane

Well another game that we have come very close to winning. Yesterday was a very good effort in the weather and ground conditions. It's a game I thought we had a number of scoring opportunities in both havles but were unable to make the final pass to put us over the line.
Last week I wasn't happy with our preparation and as as a result I wasn't expecting too much at the weekend as our lead up to the game had far too many interuptions.
Our opposition we played were huge!!!! and before the game I was really concerned for your safety especially in the conditions we were going to play in. It's not too often I get concerned about the size of the opposition. But there were a few players who made Pups look small.
In the tight I believed we out played them - protection of the ball was good and as a result we were able to put a number of phases together. The tackling in close was solid and the motivation to retain and gain possesion in rucks and mauls was good - you were hungry for the ball.
The loose trio of Gareth, Willy & Boy were always amongst things and were well suppotrted by the tight forwards.
Over the next two games I would like us to learn to run off Piri - & Nathan. We practice this often - However, I rarely see this in the game, yesterdays conditions would have suited this type of attack. Will continue to persist. Lineouts - were good However, I get concerned with the tap backs. Tap backs are dangerous if it isn't controlled and should never be attempted inside our own 22.
In the backs we were positive with solid games from everyone especially in the conditions. Back 3 of wings & fullback must continue working together on defence and attack. On defense we are starting to back up and cover. Need to learn to counter attack from defensive positions. On attack we need to create more numbers and learn to run straighter lines. Inside work from Tim and Waldo is improving and will only get better over the last half of the season.

This morning I read this from the word for the day and it sums up how I feel we are going
Your breaking point can be the start of a breakthrough.
Ever heard of the expression "hitting the wall" ? Runners use it when they are exhausted and feel like giving up. But seasoned athletes know if they push through the pain they'll get their second wind and experience the runners high. So keep going - By Gods grace you'll make it.

Thats how I feel after yesterdays 3-0 win. We have been so close so many times and my final two games with you may be the games that turn our season around. So what are you goals for this weeks game against Putaruru & touring Irish team. What will you do to go the extra mile to improve your game? what will you sacrifice?
We will have 2 trainings before Putaruru on thursday - I look forward to seeing you all.

Organisation - Saturday 28th June

Well this week hasn't been a memorable one. Win our first game & the following week only manage 2 trainings on one day. We have a lot, still to learn about commitment & what it means to sacrifice certain pleasures to meet commitments.
I am not into players who sit on the fence - You are committed or you find another sport or team. Sorry - I digress -This wasn't a good week.

I like to prepare, I like to know that I have made the effort , I like to know that when I win it is because I have worked for it. I also would like to know that I have others committed to the cause- What did you give up this week? Luck has nothing to do with winning.
At trainings I would like to know who is fit & able to train.
At meetings I would like you to be on time so that we can confirm that we have a team available for the weekend. I like it when people communicate what they are doing - I have a phone, I have email, I have access on the blog - you have team mates.
I will play with the bare 17 & I am not interested in part-time players to fill the gap.

Coaches Comment -21st June

Western Heights High School 2nd XV

Finally we have a win & it is something to celebrate. Hopefully, this will be a begining of a series of wins that we can put under our belt. Today I was pleased about a number of factors and like always their were a few things we still need to work on.
To the positives - 4 tries scored & I am not sure how many conversions scored, well done, You tube. My apologies - but yesterday I wasn't feeling too healthy so I appreciated everyones effort to help set up. pack up & prepare for the game. But 4 tries- we can score them & if we really look at things the score should have been higher and more tries went begging.
I was pleased with our forwards as we toiled well in rucks and mauls and we were able to go forward making it possible for our backs to to go forward. Piri - one of your better games, you started to back yourself to run & call some of the shots. You are in a leading position & you need to direct & guide your forwards as much as possible. Tar - your first full game, hold your head up high. Now, start making a difference - learn to run lower & at speed.
Inside back combination -of Where's Waldo & Tim worked well finding the gaps & running good lines. However, we still have a few problems with hands . A large number of dropped balls by backs & forwards - Handling errors. In the past, these types of errors have cost us dearly. Today we were fortunate. Theback 3 -Sean, You tube & Merryck - Still need to work on postioning when I defence Where to stand, when to come up on D- However, your covering & assitance at back was much improved on previous games.
Now to the forwards, as always you work well as a group & we must continue to work as a unit. However, when ever we get close to the line we sometimes have a brain rush & think the only way we can score is by grinding our way to the line. What hapeens - we get held up, knock it on or we lose possesion. How many times were we less than 5-10m away from the line & failed to score- We need to think & work as a team.
Finally, I want to meet at interval tomorrow in HE1 as I believe we have a number of interuptions this week & I would like to sort out who will be at practice this week. Stage Challenge???
